CAMBA, an excellent, non-profit social services agency based here in Flatbush, is in the middle of its Annual Holiday Food Drive. Even if you are not a religious person (and we are not religious people) it is always good to have one's mind refocused by the holiday season to think about those in need ... and to honor them by giving generously. Here's what the group is collecting:
Rice Beans Fruit Vegetables Pasta Canned Tuna/Salmon Canned chicken Canned or dried milk Cereal Peanut butter 100% fruit juice
More info here. You can drop off things any time at CAMBA's office in PLG, at 19 Winthrop Street, near Flatbush Avenue. Also, for those of you who are members of the Park Slope Food Coop, CAMBA will be at the Coop on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The next Community Board 9 meeting is going to be held on Tuesday, November 16, at 7 pm. Agenda items include:
1) Representatives from the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, along with City officials and a rep from architectural firm Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, will discuss the proposed redesign of the Botanic Gardens' original entrance on Flatbush Avenue. MVVA's best known local project is their work on the amazing Brooklyn Bridge Park.
2) Public input will be sought regarding a proposal from Pebbles Transportation Company to increase its van service from 16 vans to 26.
3) A representative from the Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project will give a presentation on Fair Housing and Foreclosure Prevention.
Want to hear more? Come on down to the meeting! Meetings are a blast, as long as you don't bring your two year old and spend the entire time trying to chase him down.

The FlatBed block of Hawthorne is having a meeting this Thursday at 7 pm at the Church of the Evangel. Please join us!
Let's be honest: Halloween is the best holiday, period. You may disagree, and that is your right. You may also want to stop reading now.
We're fans of the 71st Precinct Annual Halloween walk (despite the name) and, once again, had a great time last night. Still, we couldn't help but notice as we walked along last night that only a fraction of households along the Halloween route actually participate. On some blocks, there are long stretches of homes with no signs of life.
So we at Hawthorne Street have a proposal: What if, next year, we organized an effort to match people who live on the Safe Walk route but don't participate in trick-or-treating with people who don't live on the route but would like to be in on the action.
It would be a kind of micro-Home Exchange. Manor residents who don't participate would agree to let Halloween lovers (residents of PLG who don't live along the route) hang out on their stoop for the night to hand out treats, scare small children, and bring more color to the lonlier stretches of the walk. In keeping with the neighborhood convention of cumbersome and pretentious names, we could call the sponsoring agent the Society for the Perfection of Halloween Revelry in PLG.
A lot of people in Lefferts Manor complain about the amount of candy they need to buy, understandably — one homeowner we talked to last night said they went through 2,000 pieces! But the fact is that there are a lot of crazy (in a good way) people who would rather eat ramen for a week if it meant that they'd be able to participate. Perhaps they could even arrange shifts at different times, so that the route would be restocked without the homeowners having to take out a second mortgage to provide enough candy.
How about it, people? What do you think?
A couple of new yoga classes are starting up in the neighborhood. Renée Skuba will be leading a prenatal yoga class, beginning this Thursday, October 31, from 9:30 am to 11 am. The series of 3 classes is $35 (drop-ins are $15) and will take place at 74 Fenimore on the parlour floor (up the stoop). Info: 917.655.2540.
For non-pregnant people, there's going to be yoga claases held at Tafari Tribe Globe, 593 Flatbush Avenue (between Rutland and Midwood). Those classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 am, 10 am, and 11 am. Suggested donation is $7.
Tonight, you can show your support for the Lefferts Gardens Charter School by attending a soire at Lincoln Park Tavern. The $15 door fee benefits the new elementary school on Parkside.
Tuesday October 19, 2010 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Lincoln Park Tavern 49 Lincoln Rd, between Flatbush and Ocean Aves Steps from the B, Q, S and B41
There are so many family Halloween events in and around Prospect Lefferts Gardens this year, it's hard to decide what NOT to do. This year is the year we decided to break the bank and get gorilla costumes for the entire family (I figure this may be the last year that we can coerce my son, 2, into wearing a costume we picked out) so you can bet that we will milk these costumes for all they are worth.
Onward! To the events!
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 24
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Ghouls and Gourds, noon to 6 pm "Barn dancing! Stilt dancing! Giant pink gorillas playing bass and dancing! Shake a tail feather, show off your costume, and carouse with colossal puppets at Brooklyn’s wackiest costume parade! Chat with celebrated children's book authors and illustrators, pet pretend chickens, grab a gourd to help build our giant pumpkin mandala, and create your very own monster on a leash!"
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30
Noon to 3 pm: Jeremy Plays Guitar and special guest Oran Etkin $5/person over 1 years old Lincoln Park Tavern 49 Lincoln Road (between Flatbush and Ocean) Q/B/S Train to Prospect Park Oh, Jeremy, why do you torture us so with your poorly timed events! We want to see you - really we do. But you're not only up against the Montessori parents (again) you're practically up against Halloween itself.... because...
Noon to 3 pm: Prospect Park: Annual Halloween Carnival and Haunted Walk, at Neathermead. We had a great time at this last year, and this year the kid is old enough to try out the hay ride. There are also neat Halloween events at the Audubon Center, the Carousel, the Historic Lefferts House, and the Zoo both on Saturday and Sunday. You can find all of the details here.
2 pm to 6 pm: Lefferts Gardens Montessori Presents: Kiddie Costume Disco Party Rustik Tavern (471 Dekalb Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205) This is a fundraiser for Lefferts Montessori and a good way to meet Montessori parents and learn more about the preschool. $10 adults, $5 kids, LGM students free. Indoor and outdoor space - rain or shine.

Sorry for the last-minute action but we just got word that the second block of Lincoln (between Bedford & Rogers) is having a block party tomorrow, from 9 am – 6 pm. Come on down!
If you find yourself woefully lacking in knick-knacks, this weekend is your chance to remedy the situation. PLG Arts is once again sponsoring ArtMart 11225, an open-air bazaar for local artisans.
Brooklyn Paper beat us to press on this, so we are going to crib some of their copy:
Lincoln Road will be taken over with handmade jewelry, including Lingua Nigra’s alluring gold bangles, knitwear, clothing, pottery, and even instruments...
In addition to the artisans, artists will be hawking their wares and, when you get hungry, Enduro and Meytex will be around (Selling? Offering samples? I don't know; all I know is that they will be there.) For a sampling of vendor bios, photos from last year and sponsors, check out the event site.
Finally, the Maple Street School will be selling children's clothes, toys and books as a fundraiser for the school.
Lincoln Road between Flatbush and Ocean (gmap) Saturday, October 2d 10AM - 6PM Rain or Shine*
*The Maple Street tag sale — but not ArtMart itself — has a rain date of Sunday, October 3d.
I regret to inform you that Jeremy Zmeda aka Jeremy Plays Guitar will be doing a show this Saturday at Lincoln Park Tavern (49 Lincoln Road - gmap). I regret to inform you because we're going to have to miss it!
The show is to promote a new album, Use Your Words, which will presumably be available for purchase at the show. Admission is $5 for people over 1, and it runs from 12 noon until 2 pm.
It's probably just as well that we can't make it. The last time my kid was at Lincoln Park (which is where he always wants to go when we're eating at Enduro) he screamed mercilessly until we let him play pool... and then got us kicked out!
