Bad News for Culpeppers

A while back, fellow blogger Plog reported on the closing of Culpepper's for Department of Health violations. When we checked in at Culpepper's location on Nostrand and Lincoln a few weeks ago, they were scheduled to re-open on May 7th, the lights were on and everything seemed ready to go.

Fast-forward to yesterday afternoon, when I was greeted by the bright orange sign indicating nonpayment of taxes and seizure by the State of New York.

Regardless of whether you'd consider eating food from an establishment that's failed its DOH inspection (I admit that I would! The food at Culpepper's was just that good), it looks like a long road back for this Bajan standby.

Sunday: Abiyoyopalooza African Music Festival in Prospect Park

This Sunday, PLGArts and the Maple Street School are joining forces to present Abiyoyopalooza, a "music and storytelling event for pre-school and young school-age children" featuring "African Music & Magic."

Musicians and storytellers Hasan Baker and Kevin Nathaniel introduce children to the sounds of Africa and the African diaspora through the story of a young musician, a magician and how they save their village from the evil giant Abiyoyo.  Instruments include the djembe, mbira, bongo and shekere.

There will also be a book giveaway and other post-show fun for the kids.

It all takes place near the Audubon Center in Prospect Park. Enter the park by Lincoln Road and follow the duck feet.

Manor Arts Show Opening This Saturday at K-Dog and 65 Fen

Students from our local Manor Arts school will be exhibiting their work in two local spots, starting this Saturday, May 7. The opening will be from 4-5 pm at 65 Fen wine shop (65 Fenimore Street, off Flatbush) and from 5-6 pm at K-Dog & Dunebuggy Cafe (43 Lincoln Road). The exhibit will run through May 14th. Come on down!

Alphabet Arts for the Parents: Monday May 2

Local puppeteers Alphabet Arts, who previously brought us City of Hamburgers and Puppets Got Talent - are doing a fundraiser but this time the show is for adults.

On Monday, May 2 Alphabet Arts is holding their 1st Annual Couty Fair at Jalopy Theater. The county fair experience will include:

The show is for 18 and over so don't bring the kids. Go so that they can put on more events that you can bring your kids to. All proceeds support 2011 performances by the Alphabet Arts ensemble. If you can't make the show, you can donate directly here, which would be cool.
