Sorry for the late notice, but today, February 12, at 1PM, The Itty Biddies are giving a free concert at the Brooklyn Central Library at Grand Army Plaza:
Bring your little ones to these free, interactive, 45-minute concerts, especially designed for children ages three to six, but fun for the whole family! Concerts feature songs, movement, and instrument demonstrations and create opportunities for musical creativity and play.
The Itty Biddies' genre-defying sound has earned the group an avid following. Their interactive, energetic show takes children on a musical journey around the US and beyond through song and storytelling. The audience will dance at a hoedown, soar over imaginary rivers, and play instruments they didn’t know they had. The Itty Biddies' show is a joyful celebration for all, including parents and teachers!
The block of Hawthorne between Flatbush and Bedford is going to meeting this Thursday, February 10, at 7 pm. If you live on the block, please come out!
On the agenda:
- Signing the petition for Block Party 2011 - Strategies to combat illegal dumping of trash on the corner - Feral cat initiative - volunteers? - Election of new board members
At Church of the Evangel on the corner of Bedford and Hawthorne.
A new public elementary school in District 17, the New American Academy, will be holding an open house on Thursday, February 17, at 6:30 at the school (map). Anyone may attend. This is a chance for parents exploring all their public school options to check out a promising new school. The school is now accepting applications for 2011 classes of Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade.
I wrote about the New American Academy on Hawthorne Street last year because its programs (trilingual education in English, Spanish, and French, for instance) and progressive model sounds promising. You can read more about it here.
(Thanks, Michiko!)

We just got a tip from the garbage man that the recycling truck will be around (again) today. If you have any reycling you've been storing, now would be a good time to put it out.
I don't know what normal people do with papers that need to be protected from evil-doers before being recycled but after have two shredders in a row break on us within months, I started stockpiling for the day we can afford a shredder that doesn't die immediately. After reaching the spill-over point of our "to be shredded" bin, I bagged a bunch of papers up and put them under our stoop for temporary storage.
I had actually forgotten about this, however, until just recently. While cleaning under the stoop, I found the old bag... and - behold - it no longer needed shredding! Thanks to some flooding last year, nature and her legion of microbes had turned our private dealings into compost. What a bargain!
