Homesick Cafe Renamed Blue Roost

2010-09-06_12-29-13_659In case you've been wondering what happened to the cute painted sign on the gate of the Homesick Cafe, the owners decided to have it re-painted because they are changing the name to Blue Roost. Apparently, a bevy of busybodies convinced Billy and Linda that having the word "sick" anywhere in the name of a food-related business is a bad idea.

I'm with you; the name invited ill humor, like my childhood friend growing up in Iowa -- Richard Wacker. However, someone should really tell them that "blue roost" is an old farm saying for "spoiled eggs."

The original name, of course, was based on the Anne Tyler novel, "Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant," but not many people got the reference, unfortunately. No idea where they got the new name.

Aw, I loved the name Homesick Restaurant. It absolutely sounded literary without having to know its exact reference. I myself never once thought about getting sick from food looking at the name. It had a very positive feeling to me, it suggested it was a cure for feeling homesick not the cause. And it's not like a name would keep people away. That applies more to an area where they're competing with twenty similar restaurants! Er, not the case here. I wonder if professional marketing consultant types really know more than the general public; seems it's just about whether you have the opportunity to screen the public for opinions. Everybody I know loved the name, Homesick Restaurant. But whatever, not important, very happy they're here and we'll support it whatever they're called.
