Haircuts in PLG
You might think that with all of the hair salons along Flatbush, at least one would cater to "white people" hair. You would be wrong (and you probably shouldn't have thought it). But through a friend, I found a stylist here who works out of her apartment on Lincoln: Lola Lorraine. Four days a week, she works at a couple of salons in the city, but on evenings and weekends she sees clients here in the neighborhood. You can reach her at 917-915-9700 or lolalorraine@gmail.com.
Anyway, she's great, and she's affordable. Women's haircuts are $40. You'll need to block out time, though; she's very thorough. I have a graduated bob and it took over an hour to cut, but as an expert in my own hair I can verify that she did an excellent job.

Does she do dudes?

Yep, dudes and kids. I'm not sure how much she charges, though (it's got to less than the charge for women).

My guess is that most of the barbershops can handle "white people hair." I used to go to the Haitian barbershop on Rogers and Lincoln Road, and the proprietor, Eddie, did a meticulous job. I only stopped going there because I was too impatient to wait my turn on the somewhat considerable line.

I suspect if you have don't mind a little ridicule you could get a cut just about anywhere. I asked the guys as Dr. Cuts (if I remember correctly) if they cut white guy hair and their response was "that sh#ts easy" and we all laughed but I continue to go to one of the old Italian guy places - Park Slope Barber. But it ain't perfect. Sometimes they say stuff I'm not very comfortable with, if you know what I mean. I think I'll try again around here and I suspect it'll make a really great story. I'll let you know!

Don't forget color & highlights. Lola Lorraine is the best colorist I've found in Brooklyn and I'm reeeally picky about tones and placement of highlights. Having Lola here is like PLG having the best salon in Brooklyn. I'm in dire need of a visit with her though so don't judge her skill by how my hair looks now!

If you're looking for white clientele as your barometer, you may not "see" anywhere. But a good place is Satisfaction Guaranteed at 7 Winthrop Street. Ask for Marjorie. She does women's hair including cuts/color/rinses...anything.
