I'm always meeting people at the Lincoln Street playground who haven't heard about the email list for PLG families with young children so, for the uninitiated, here's the yahoo group page. The list is useful for finding out about kid-friendly happenings, babysitters, local schools/daycares, and the like. (It was initially intended for organizing playgroups, but it's not used much for that anymore.)

While we're talking about police action, a serial burglar with a career in our neighborhood was arrested on Saturday. If you haven't heard about this guy, consider yourself lucky: you too could have had your TV antenna or 10 gallon fish tank stolen.
The alleged perpetrator, Michael Burnett, recently broke into the Lefferts Gardens Montessori School and three other daycare centers. And a fish tank wasn't the only thing he stole. “He took our new TV, a radio CD player, a DVD player and computer
parts," said Sheila Foster-Golding, owner of the David Foster Academy,
located about a block further down on Rogers Avenue between Fenimore and
Hawthorne streets. “He even took the antenna to our other TV, so we
can’t play that either."
Could've been worse, I suppose. He could have stolen the class hamster.
Meanwhile down yonder, there's been a rash of home burglaries in Ditmas and Victorian Flatbush, including at least one attempt when people were actually home. Residents seem to be on top of matters, though, and are meeting with police to figure out what can be done. A teenager was caught over the weekend with some of the stolen items; fingers crossed that this ends the crime spree.
We're not exactly sure why police cars were backed up at Parkside and Flatbush this evening, but I have a hunch that it might be from this: Police in Brooklyn shot a woman after she refused to drop a knife. It happened just before 7pm Monday on Parkside Avenue in Flatbush. Police responded to the call of an emotionally disturbed person. Once inside, they confronted the 31-year-old woman and told her to drop a knife that she was holding, and sprayed her with pepper spray.
(The article doesn't state a location on Parkside, though, so don't quote me.)
Moses Fried, noted slumlord of 205 Parkside Avenue, is in the news again…. and no, I'm not talking about the recent shutdown on one of his illegal hourly "hotels." An anonymous neighbor, a local hero of sorts, complained to the Department of Buildings about 205's cracked facade and the DOB issued a stop work order. Fried responded by installing scaffolding along Parkside Court and the complaint is now resolved. But hopefully neighbors will stay on the case. RELATED: 205 Parkside Available For Free? Back when we first moved to the neighborhood and were still excited about home renovation, we were given a stack of Old House Journals, courtesy of Mr. Bob Marvin. Now, with spring cleaning upon me, I'm eager to find a new home for them. If you want 'em, email me (brooklynite282 at gmail) and they're yours.
On Saturday, June 19th, Hawthorne Street is going to sponsor our first ever PLG Family Day at Prospect Park, so save the date to pick up trash with your neighbors!
In the mean time, Prospect Park can always use volunteers to help keep litter in control. Right now they're looking for volunteers to work alongside staff members "distributing literature, garbage bags, etc. to park users in BBQ and picnic areas. The shifts are 8:00a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m." To help out, call the Park at (718)965-8960 or email volunteers (at) prospectpark.org.

There was a fire last night at 135 Ocean (gmap). The third floor trash closet caught fire, sending clouds of thick smoke through the building where they greeted our tipster, a 6th floor resident of 135.
No injuries were reported nor did it appear that anyone has been displaced. I'll update this post if we get any more information. Thanks, Nick.
The Hawthorne Street Block Association, of Flatbush, is holding its first ever "Clean and Green" day this Saturday, at 10 am. If you live on the block, please join us and help beautify the block. We'll be preparing preparing street planters, mulching green spaces, and picking up litter. Our very own President Lisa Cummings will be making muffins for everyone who helps out. Meet in front of 45 Hawthorne.
Thanks to Kings County Nurseries for a generous discount on wood planters.
This Saturday, April 24, there's going to be a workshop for neighborhood parents of school-age children. Building Academic Success, sponsored by the Fellowship Moravian Church and the Caribbean American Social Workers Association, is designed to help parents better understand the NYC public school system. WHERE: Church of the Evangel (1950 Bedford Avenue, at Hawthorne) DATE: Saturday, April 24 TIME: Noon to 2:30 pm Interested parties should RSVP to thelma.armstrong @ gmail.com or 718-490-6564.
A neighbor on Hawthorne sent us the following email. I wasn't around when the incident described occurred, but perhaps others may know enough to comment.
[The other night] I was walking home and witnessed a truly disturbing scene between two police officers and a young woman who has lived on Hawthorne st her whole life (16 years). Basically she was arrested as she was asking them for help -- her little brother, 12, had been mugged. There were probably about 100 people or so out on the street insisting that they let her go and the street broke into a scene of potential chaos. I tried my best to intervene but all they did was threaten to arrest me.... I spoke with her today and she said she would appreciate any help getting the word out. She is looking for other witnesses because many people were taking pictures and yelling at the cops to release her.
If anyone knows more about this incident or has had specific difficulties with local police, let us know. If you would like to get in contact with the writer, leave a comment with your info below, or you can email me at brooklynite282 @ gmail and I'll pass it on. Thanks.
