For Spring Plantings, Shop Local
Every year around this time, someone posts a question on the Lefferts list about where to buy plants and garden items. So this year we are proactively recommending our local garden shop, Kings County Nursery, on New York Avenue between Fenimore and Rutland. They carry pretty much anything you want, their prices are reasonable, and you don't have to get in a car to shop there. (I bring a large grocery cart for heavy items and that usually does the trick.)
Kings is giving the Hawthorne Street Block Association a discount on street planters, and would most likely be willing to work with other block associations on their street plantings. So call 'em up and ask: 718-493-2363.

Totally agree. I love these guys. Joe, the owner, is about as old school Brooklyn as it gets. They've been there for decades, and are very informed and friendly. Definitely my go-to place.

I get most of my plants from these guys. They have been there forever and have a great selection, fair prices, and are informative and helpful. What more can you ask for. Not as cheap as HD or Lowes, but much, much higher quality plants and you can walk!

One can also pick up one of the best sandwiches in the neighborhood next door.

Do they have a good selection of indoor plants too for us apartment dwellers?

They do have indoor plants, Mikep. This is a great place everybody should know about and support. My toddler son and I enjoy our shopping errands there so much. The owners fuss over him and we walk the paths through the shrubs and trees like it's a visit to a garden. They have equipment as well, if you aren't in the mood to drive to Home Depot when you need a new garden hose.

Also confirming that they are very helpful and nice. Everything you can ask for in a community business!
