Nostrand Ave Sunday Smorgasbord
In the mood for Caribbean, but feeling indecisive about oxtail vs. jerk vs. saltfish, we checked out Soldier's Restaurant last weekend. Certainly not the only restaurant of this type in the neighborhood, but the only one that we know of on Nostrand Avenue, Soldier's is a self-serve hot food bar with a good amount of seating and a warm atmosphere.
We tried a number of items. The big hits were the stews: curried goat and oxtail, with tasty sides of yucca, peas & rice, plantain and macaroni pie. Also delicious was the callaloo & saltfish, although there were more bones in the fish than we would have liked. They also have a selection of chicken, both BBQ and jerk, though the chicken clearly suffered from spending too much time under the heat lamps (in my opinion, best to stick with Hammond's or Peppa's for jerk and come here for the stew). The best part was the price: under $10 for two heaping plates of food. Perhaps enough for an army.
Soldier's is located at 1278 Nostrand between Parkside and Clarkson.

Credit for at least walking on Nostrand ave as many in the PLG crowd couldn't be bothered. Immaculee? Restaurant on Nostrand and Winthrop has some good Haitian grub.
