Doggywood "reveal" this weekend

The Doggywood mural that we wrote about a while back is going up this weekend. Local artist Susan Berkowitz is billing the event as "the Red Carpet Reveal... a canine parade of lucky dawgs and awards ceremony" on Saturday, October 17 (rain date: Sunday, October 18). There was no time listed on the flyer, though, so your guess is as good as mine.

I'll confess that our initial excitement over Doggywood ended in disillusionment upon discovering that our beloved Ethel was excluded from the judging. Yes, we are that petty.

PLG/Crown Heights Food Coop meeting tonight

Sorry for the last-minute notice but I just want to remind people that there's a planning meeting tonight for people interested in starting a food coop in the neighborhood. The meeting will be at the Maple Street School, at 7pm tonight (Thursday, Oct. 15) at 21 Lincoln Road between Flatbush and Ocean. More info here.

Followup to the Parkside shooting

According to New York 1, the gunman entered the coffee shop and opened fire on the three men inside:

This just in from ABC-News 7: An argument in front of a bodega on A gunman killed an 18 year old man and injured two others on Parkside last night. All three victims were men between the ages of 18 and 23. The man who died was later identified as Brian Scott.

It's scary to see this photo of the police tape (via ABC 7/Eyewitness News). Anyone who uses the Parkside subway station knows this block well.

Meet the Beetle

While my son was gamboling about the Lincoln Road playground yesterday, I caught this beetle walking on the slide. Since it wasn't an Asian Long Horned beetle, I left it alone.

I am fascinated by the markings on this guy, which remind me of an African mask. If there are any coleopterists out there who can give me more information about this creature, I'd love to hear more.

Free education workshop this Wednesday, Oct. 14, 7 pm

The Winthrop Street New Generation Block Association (Flatbush to Bedford) has organized a workshop, "3 Things You Can Do Today for Educational Success," for all community members. The press release sayeth:

Hawthorne Street block association meeting this Wednesday

Residents from the block of Hawthorne between Flatbush and Bedford are meeting on Wednesday to set up a new block association. The meeting will be held at Church of the Evangel (corner of Hawthorne and Bedford) at 7 pm on October 14. Come on down!

Stop & ... Stor?

Looks like rumors of a new supermarket in the neighborhood have been greatly exaggerated. Despite hearing on the local yahoo group about a new Stop&Shop on Empire Boulevard between Bedford & Rogers, when I searched Google the place just didn't exist. Maybe it was too new? We checked it out in person this weekend.

Well kids, if you want Stop&Shop you'll still have to head down to Tilden Ave. If you're just looking for somewhere to store your old comic books, then Empire Boulevard is the place to be.

OHNY this weekend!

Interested in architecture and design, or just want to get a free glimpse of some New York City sights and landmarks? See some subway tunnels or cruise the Brooklyn Navy Yard? Open House New York has a weekend event once a year, during which a bunch of sites throughout the five boroughs are open to the public (many of which are only open during this event). October 10 and 11 are the dates for this year.

This year the Lefferts Historic House is included, along with special events at the Brooklyn Public Library and Brooklyn Museum. (Reservations are required for tours of the Lefferts House.)

Brooklyn Public Library now open on Sundays

The Brooklyn Public Library has extended its hours in many branches across the borough. The Central Library at Grand Army Plaza, for instance, is now open Sundays from 1 to 5 pm.  Unfortunately, the two branches closest to PLG—Flatbush (22 Linden) and Crown Heights (560 New York Ave.)—are unaffected.
