Happy Random Anniversary, PLG!
While I wish the Brooklyn Eagle had held this story for a year so that the title of this post wouldn't be so silly, yesterday marked the 29th Anniversary of PLG's designation as a historic district.
The article has an interesting architectural timeline of the neighborhood, from the first 1890's construction frenzy to the limestone explosion between 1905 and 1910, through the finishing touch of red brick Colonials in 1915-1925.

This is the second year they've run this story so, perhaps, they will have it next year too, for our HD's 30th.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get someone from the LPC to come talk at our next block assoication meeting? So many of the houses on my block continue to be disfigured by people unaware of or choosing to ignore the landmark designation of the street and it is painful to watch. Perhaps if someone could explain the advantages of respecting and restoring the historic character of the houses on my street it would help -- I am certianly not making any headway by myself, beyond getting a reputation as the neighborhood kook.

Good luck on getting a response from LPC! That is yet another overworked, underfunded City agency that could really benefit from a major overhaul. You might do better with inviting a rep from the Historic Districts Council to come to a meeting of your block association. HDC is a citywide nonprofit organization whose mission is historic preservation. Check them out at www.HDC.org. Although, from the sound of it, doesn't seem as if mere talking is going to make a difference to those on your block who don't value your landmark status. Hate to say it, but it may be time for whistleblowing.

Unfortunately I'd have to blow the whistle on just about every house on the block -- and nothing compels anyone to do anything anyway -- check this out:http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/PropertyProfileOverviewServlet?boro=3&houseno=267&street=lefferts+ave.&requestid=0&s=A03C41B885B461E4F46BD08866A7430E
That's over one year since they amputated the stoop and all they've done since then is to tear up the sidewalk, which is now just dirt with boards over it. I've called 311 six times to complain about that -- every time I see an elederly person struggling to cross that mess.

Thanks for your suggestion on the HDC -- I'll definitely contact them.
