Block party on Hawthorne tomorrow - Sat. Sept. 13
Church of the Evangel is holding its annual block party on Hawthorne between Flatbush and Bedford tomorrow, from 10 am to 5 pm. The festivities include the NY Knicks van, a book mobile, clowns, vendors, food, games, and walking back and forth down the middle of the road with abandon.

we have lived on the block (hawthorne btwn flatbush and bedford) for 6 years now. Honestly, this was the first time I ever realized we had an annual block party. My husband took our 19 mo old to the Knicks van and she came home with a headband and a soft basketball which she only acknowledges when she wants to bite it, and there was loud music (which is not reserved for block parties) in two sections of the block. I have to say it was a dud. Maybe because I have done little to go out of my way to meet the neighbors on the street but I am not a skateboarding male tween or a double dutch jumping female tween (and when I was a tween, I never learned how to double dutch jump properly).
Hopefully in the future, the Church and the Masons will organize more, maybe with participation from people who act live on the block or is that not what it's about?
I just found this blog today and I am so happy that its here!

i agree-- the block party was a dud. i didn't see any food for sale, aside from peeps grilling on their patios or whatever, and the volume of the music (two doors down from me) bordered on obscenely earsplitting.
had i gotten any notice of the block party, as a hawthorne resident, i would have loved to contribute in some way. i think it's a great idea in theory.

Sorry for this out-of-date posting, but I just found the blog and saw the block party comments. I’ve lived at 35 since 2002, but was out of the country for past two years. I’m happy to be back. Nice blog. Thanks for doing it.
As a former member, I know the folks at Evangel very well. Believe me, they would love greater participation from the locals. One of the primary goals of the block party is to bring people on the street together. It will happen again this year in September and I encourage the readers of this blog to get involved and make it what you’d like it to be. Please contact me at johnny@pipeline.com. If we start planning now, we can make it a party we all enjoy.
