Pioneer's Biggest Bargain?

Every time I walk past the barrels of broken glass in front of the Parkside Avenue Pioneer Supermarket I can't decide whether to laugh or cry.

Thanks for the prompt... I finally got so sick of this that I called 311 and filed a sanitation complaint. Seems like every weekend there are shards of glass spilling out all over the sidewalk around these barrels. And this is a incredibly high-traffic pedestrian area (right next to the subway and the park). I'll comment again to let you know how the city responds....

I am appalled at your attitude about the barrels of recycling on Parkside Avenue. For one thing, this is a source of income for some of your neighbors. These are people with very little who are showing industriousness. Maybe you'd prefer to let your tax dollars provide them with welfare instead of this cottage industry.

Second, considering the amount of trash that is strewn everywhere in this neighborhood, and the amount of trash that comes out of everyone's mouth, the anger, arrogance, and violence, what in the world are you focusing on this small error that actually does something good for the neighborhood, the environment in general and the people who do the collecting.

It's in barrels, maybe it spills over, but it's contained. Unlike the trash everywhere else.

Please try to control something else. And good luck with that.

You are assuming a lot here, Lona. I agree that recycling is good; that the people who recycle do a service to the community by cleaning up the streets and park and should profit for it; that Pioneer should have redemption machines. Pioneer is not the only grocery store in the city that takes deposit bottles back. They are the only one I've ever seen that leaves a dangerous condition on the streets.

Where we disagree is this: Pioneer should not leave open barrels of broken glass on the street. The legal term for this is "attractive nuisance." When some kid reaches in and opens their hand Pioneer will pay for it.

Cap the barrels or find a place to store them - that's all we are suggesting.
