Make your own "no fliers" sign

Nocirculars As you may know, it's now illegal for advertisers to leave fliers and grocery store circulars on your stoop if you have a NO FLIERS sign posted. The trick is finding a cheap way to post the sign that isn't too unsightly. I can't promise that I've succeeded on that count, but the signs I made for a couple of neighbors and I have worked wonders in cutting down the circulars we receive.

If you'd like one yourself, all you need to do is print this pdf out, cut out the signs, and get them laminated (I went to the Staples on Flatbush at Tilden). Next, poke a couple of holes in the top with a hole punch, put some picture wire through, wrap it around an iron gate and you're done.

I made a bunch of signs and it was only a few bucks. You can use the extra signs to give away or to replace the old ones after they succumb to the weather.

Is it also illegal for them to slip menus under your door? Because is driving me crazy.

Your sign looks better than the one I posted under "Files" on the Lefferts Yahoo list. I hope it works better as well--mine's been totally ineffective :-(

Does anyone know if the new law has taken effect? I thought it started next year.

I'm not sure when the law goes in effect (the NYT article doesn't say) but I've had a lot of luck using the sign in conjunction with calling the two largest ad packets distributors (phone numbers are usually hidden in small print on the fliers or bags). One company even called me back just to say that they were working on educating their delivery people to make sure to look for the signs.

I still get an occasional menu or handbill, but nothing like the avalanche of crap we had before.

I'm not sure if this bill applies to people in apartment buildings--I kinda doubt it...

Those circulars are a real PITA.

But I want more menus! :)
