Idea for a campaign to bring more restaurants to PLG

RestaurantreceiptCharles and I were eating out in Park Slope tonight, as we often do. When the waitress left us the check, I wrote a little note on the spare receipt:

Dear Franny's,
You all should open a restaurant in Prospect Lefferts. We have no Italian restaurants and we are HUNGRY!

... which got me thinking: what if everyone in PLG started writing brief notes on their restaurant receipts whenever they ate in their favorite Park Slope (or Carroll Gardens or Cobble Hill, etc.) haunts? Who knows, if enough people did so, maybe we could get a Franny's or a Song in our neck of the woods. This also has the benefit of putting our money where our mouth is.

If you all think this is a good idea and are willing to help spread the word, let me know. I'd be up for sending out a press release just to, y'know, make it official.

Great idea IMO.

i think that is a fantastic idea, its like a restaurant revolution!
i will use it for sure!!!

btw, friends of mine are preparing to open a restaurant in PLG similar to the ones in the neighborhoods you mentioned!
they are looking to get the space on fenimore and flatbush.... how great will that be!

KC, wow - definitely keep us posted about that!

I wonder whether it might be prudent to focus on a few restaurants so as not to spread ourselves too thin. My votes would go toward:

Song (best Thai around, imho; and super cheap; also, it's one of two restaurants, so there's a decent chance the owners would be up for trying another.)

Olive Vine (solid middle eastern)

Franny's (pricier but the PS place is usually so packed you have to wait ages to get a table)

La Taqueria - great and reasonably health burritos. yeah, I know we have Enduro but burritos (and beans and rice, for that matter) aren't their thing. Plus, if it were set up more like the take out side they wouldn't really compete. Again, they already have 2 stores... what's one more?

HOUSEofCAKES

I have to say that Franny's is totally overrated and expensive. I have been there several times and the pizzas are average and sparse and totally expensive. I don't care if they cure their own meats. We got an "olive" pizza and it literally had 9 half-olives on it! I know my pizza and I keep reading about how great it is there, etc. etc. and frankly, I don't know what the hype is. Anyone who pays $8 for panna cotta is a fool it's so easy to make. As well, the service is aloof. MEH!

Charles

Expensive? Yes. Average? No. In any event, this isn't really a bash-a-restaurant kind of post. Please don't go to Franny's and write "Stay the hell out of PLG!!! *skull and crossbones*" If you have a different restaurant you want to invite, please do!

plger

i went to "song" tonight and wrote a note asking them to come to plg. btw i've cornered the owner-one of the owners?- in the past and made the same request face to face. i'm keeping my fingers crossed....

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know what the new place on Flatbush called Lime is going to be like? A restaurant, or a bar?

Charles Star

Lime is going to be a bar.
